The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) system was created after the 2007-08 financial crisis to enhance transparency in financial dealings. It aims to tackle problems like misleading financial statements and undisclosed debts by companies. The system helps reduce risks for businesses and financial institutions by offering trustworthy information about those involved in transactions.
What is the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) ?
The LEI is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code that follows the ISO 17442 standard set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It serves as a global registry for financial transactions, promoting transparency and accountability. This identifier provides important details about ownership structures and the parties involved in transactions.
Features of the LEI code :
Key features of the LEI code include :
- Global Standard: Ensures uniform application worldwide.
- Unique Identifier: Each legal entity receives one distinct code.
- Public Access: Available for free to everyone.
- Data Quality: Supported by reliable, high-quality information.
LEI code structure :
The LEI code structure is as follows:
- Characters 1-4: Assigned by the ROC Secretariat, unique to each Local Operating Unit (LOU).
- Characters 5-6: Reserved characters (00).
- Characters 7-18: A 12-character reference assigned based on clear allocation policies.
- Characters 19-20: Two check digits according to the ISO 17442 standard.
