Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra 2024

Every year, on the second day of the bright lunar fortnight of Ashadha, the coastal town of Puri comes alive with the celebration of the Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra. This festival features a ceremonial procession of Lord Jagannath, along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. The deities are paraded through the city, offering devotees a chance to glimpse them, symbolising the Gods’ tour to check on their subjects.

Held annually at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, the Rath Yatra is scheduled according to the Hindu lunar calendar, specifically on Dwitiya Tithi during Shukla Paksha of the Ashadha month. The rituals begin well before the procession, with the Snana Yatra, a ceremonial bath for the deities, occurring about 18 days prior on Jyestha Purnima. Following the Snana Yatra, the deities are kept in isolation due to a slight discoloration, considered as a period of illness, until the day of the Rath Yatra.
