Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayak Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav, is a major Hindu festival celebrated in honor of Lord Ganesha, the deity of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune. Ganesha’s Curse to the Moon :

  1. While riding his rat Vahana, Ganesha once slipped, causing the Moon to laugh at him. Angry, Ganesha cursed the Moon, decreeing that it would not seen by anyone.
  2. The Gods, saddened by this curse, worshipped Ganesha, who modified the curse so that anyone seeing the Moon on Bhadra Shukla Chaturthi would face false accusations.
  3. To avoid this, reciting the mantra “Singh Prasenamvadhitsingho Jambavta Hatah Sukumarak Maa Rodistava Horsha Syamantak”advised.

Importance of Left-Trunked Ganesha:

  1. During Ganesha Puja, its crucial to place an idol with a left-trunked tusk.
  2. It believed that Ganesha with a left trunk gets pleased immediately, whereas one with a right trunk takes longer to appease.
  3. Therefore, worshippers should prefer idols of Ganesha with a left trunk for their rituals.

  • Ganesha’s Knowledge Test : Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati challenged their sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, to complete three universe revolutions. Ganesha, cleverly circling his parents, won the fruit of knowledge.

The Vidhi of Ganesha Chaturthi Fast :

1. Morning Rituals :

  • After bathing, bring Ganesha’s idol made of gold, copper, or clay.
  • Prepare a Kalash with water, tie its mouth with cloth, and seat Ganesha Ji on it.

2. Offerings :

  • Present vermilion and Durva to Ganesha Ji.
  • Offer a Bhog of twenty-one laddoos, of which five offered to Ganesha and the rest distributed among the needy or Brahmins.

3. Evening Puja :

  • Perform Ganesha Puja in the evening.
  • Read Ganesha Chaturthi Katha, Ganesha Chalisa, and Aarti.
  • Offer Arghya to the Moon with eyes lowered.

4. Special Worship :

  • Ganesha Ji worshipped as Siddhivinayak on this auspicious day.
  • Observance of a fast is customary.
