Free Solar Panel Scheme by Government of India

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the launch of the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ during the 2024-25 budget presentation. This scheme aims to install rooftop solar panels on one crore households across the country, providing up to 300 units of free electricity per month. The initiative includes substantial subsidies transferred directly to people’s bank accounts and offers heavily concessional bank loans to minimize financial burdens.

The government will cover up to 40% of the installation cost of solar panels. By leveraging solar energy, the scheme is designed to help households, especially those from lower-income and middle-class segments, save significantly on electricity bills. Additionally, households can sell surplus power back to the grid, potentially saving the government approximately Rs. 75,000 crore annually in electricity costs.

Government Allocations and Consumer Rates :
  • The Central Government has allocated Rs. 5000 crores under the National Solar Mission (NSM).
  • Consumers will be charged at a rate of 6.50/kWh for using the solar energy system.
Solar Panel Subsidy Cost Estimation :
  • Benchmark cost of grid-connected solar system by MNRE, as of 2024 :
    System Capacity Benchmark Cost (₹/W)
    1 kW ₹51.10
    Above 1 kW to 2 kW ₹46.98
    Above 2 kW to 3 kW ₹45.76
    Above 3 kW to 10 kW ₹44.64
    Above 10 kW to 100 kW ₹41.64
    Above 100 kW to 500 kW ₹39.08
  • Average installation cost with the latest technology products is approximately ₹60,000 per kW across India, varying slightly by state.
  • This cost includes product expenses, installation charges, and service costs for five years, inclusive of net metering facilities.
