⁠iit Kanpur Olympiad Admission 2025-26

Beginning in the academic year 2025–2026, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur will be accepting top-performing students from worldwide Olympiads in topics including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and informatics through a new admissions pathway for its BTech and BS programs. This program gives highly gifted Olympiad winners direct admission to IITK, providing an alternative to the conventional JEE (Advanced) pathway.

Five departments will have reserved seats: two for Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, six for Computer Science and Engineering, two for Chemistry, three for Economic Sciences, and four for Mathematics and Statistics. In addition to giving Olympiad competitors the chance to follow their passions at one of India’s top educational institutions, this pathway seeks to recognize their accomplishments and hard training.

IIT Kanpur is starting a new way for Olympiad winners to get into its BTech and BS programs, beginning in the academic year 2025-26. This option is for students who have performed well in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Informatics Olympiads. It aims to acknowledge talented students who have trained hard in Olympiads and allows them to join IIT Kanpur without taking the JEE (Advanced) exam.

Reservation Criteria :

Reserved seats are available in the following departments :

• Biological Sciences & Bioengineering
• Computer Science & Engineering
• Chemistry
• Economic Sciences
• Mathematics & Statistics

Eligibility Criteria :

To be eligible, applicants must meet these criteria:

• Be the same age as those taking the JEE (Advanced).
• Have completed Class XII (or an equivalent) in the year of admission or the previous year.
• Have Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as required subjects in Class XII.
• Attend the Olympiad training camp for the subject they wish to apply for.
• Students who were previously admitted to IITs through JoSAA or had their IIT admissions canceled are not eligible.

The admission process :

1. Shortlisting: Departments will evaluate applicants based on their Olympiad rankings and create a shortlist.
2. Written Exam & Interview: Shortlisted candidates must take a written exam, and an interview may be needed based on the department.
3. Selection Committee Review: The final selection will be done at the Institute level by the Dean of Academic Affairs. All department recommendations will be reviewed to finalize the list of admitted students, ensuring no seats are double-allocated.

Common Eligibility Criteria :

• Age Limit: Candidates must meet the age requirement set for JEE (Advanced) for the current year.
• al Qualification: Candidates should have taken the Class XII or equivalent exam for the first time either in the year they apply to IIT Kanpur or the year before, with mandatory subjects being Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
• Marks in Qualifying Examination: Candidates need to achieve first-class marks in their qualifying exam.
• Previous IIT Admission: Those who were admitted to any IIT through JoSAA in the last year (whether they accepted the seat or not) cannot apply through Olympiads.
• Cancellation of IIT Admission: Candidates whose IIT admissions were canceled after enrollment are also ineligible for Olympiad admission.
• Olympiad Participation: Candidates should have participated in the International Olympiad Training Camp in the relevant field as determined by the department.

Department-Level Selection Process :

• Selection Based on Olympiad Rank: The department will shortlist candidates using the Olympiad rank list. Shortlisted candidates must take a required written exam and may also have an optional interview for final selection.

Institute-Level Selection Process :

• Selection Committee Composition:
  • Convener: Dean of Academic Affairs
  • Members: Head of the Department, Convener of DUGC, Faculty Representative appointed by the HoD, DOAA Official (Secretary)
• Committee’s Role: The committee asks shortlisted candidates for their program preferences and selects top applicants for each program. No candidate should appear on multiple lists in the same department. The committee ensures all offer lists are unique and fills all open seats.
• Admission Offer Process: In the first round, the committee will send admission offers to chosen candidates. They must accept or reject the offer by a set deadline, and candidates cannot hold offers.
• Subsequent Rounds: If a candidate rejects an offer or does not respond on time, the committee will extend the offer to the next shortlisted candidate. This will continue for up to three rounds, aiming to fill all available spots.
